Congo studies energy for special economic zones

A new study aims to boost electricity supply to 805 MW for industrial zones and companies.

Minister Michel Djombo announced in Brazzaville on November 3 that a study on powering special economic zones (ZES) will identify solutions to increase electricity supply. The goal is to reach an estimated 805 MW capacity for ZES and industrial firms to ensure efficient operation.

Djombo stated that industries need energy for production, and many currently struggle to operate. The study will assess energy needs for ZES and support industries like forestry companies near these zones. He noted that energy constraints deter investors from developing projects in the ZES.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is providing technical support for the study, which is part of a rural electrification program. UNDP representative Adama-Dian Barry pledged to help mobilize funding for the project's implementation and expressed hope for concrete outcomes to transform the industrial sector.

Why it mattersIndustrial companies and potential investors in the Republic of Congo face energy supply challenges that hinder production and project development.
