Ethiopia plans quarterly GDP reporting

The move aims to modernize economic statistics and improve fiscal transparency.

Ethiopia is preparing to report its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) quarterly as part of a plan to update its national economic statistics system. This transition from annual to quarterly reporting will improve fiscal transparency and support evidence-based policymaking.

Fitsum Assefa, Minister of Finance, stated that the government will build on recent GDP rebasing reforms to enhance economic and public finance information. The initiative includes modernizing Government Finance Statistics and aligning national accounting with international standards.

The reform involves improving the classification of public revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities. Ethiopia's GDP was estimated at 24.03 trillion birr ($201.42 billion) in the 2024/25 fiscal year, expanding to 31.86 trillion birr ($210.70 billion) in 2025/26.

Why it mattersEthiopian businesses and investors will have more frequent data on the country's economic performance.
