Gabon ex-PM Bilie-By-Nze questioned by judge

Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze faced his first judicial interrogation on November 5 after six months in detention.

Former Prime Minister Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze was interrogated by an investigating judge in Libreville on Thursday, November 5. He has been detained since April 16 and his lawyer, Me Sarah-Ognyane, confirmed the hearing took place after months of defense requests.

The interrogation focused on statements previously made by Baba Ramatou on April 27. Me Sarah-Ognyane stated that her client provided clarifications on the facts he is accused of and described the session as having gone very well. The procedure has now entered a new phase.

The next step could be a confrontation between Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze and Baba Ramatou. Following this, a character investigation will occur before the judge decides on a dismissal or a trial. Me Sarah-Ognyane hopes for a resolution before the next six-month detention period expires.
