Gabon names university after pioneering cardiologist

The University of Health Sciences in Libreville will now be known as the Pierre André and Maryvonne Kombila Koumba University.

The University of Health Sciences (USS) in Libreville has been renamed the "Pierre André and Maryvonne Kombila Koumba University" to honour the late Professor Pierre-André Kombila Koumba, Gabon's first cardiologist and the first Cameroonian professor of cardiology. The ceremony on November 5, presided over by Gervais Oniane, personal representative of the President, also commemorated his wife, who was also a professor of medicine.

Professor Kombila Koumba, 85, died on October 15 from a stroke. The Health Minister, Elsa Nkana Joséphine Ayo-Bivigou, a former student, praised his scientific rigour and dedication to national cardiology, recalling his role in establishing the first cardiology department at the former General Hospital. He was posthumously awarded the National Order of Merit for his contributions.

Kombila Koumba also served as Minister of Technical Education and Vocational Training, advocating for it as a tool for youth development. The renaming decision was announced by Oniane on behalf of President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, recognizing the couple's significant legacy in medicine and education.
