Gabon lifts social media ban after eight months

The High Authority for Communication ended the suspension on October 24, 2026, citing new laws and platform cooperation.

Gabon's High Authority for Communication (HAC) lifted the eight-month suspension of social media access on Saturday, October 24, 2026. The regulator, led by Germain Ngoyo Moussavou, announced the decision in Libreville, formally ending the measure that began on February 17, 2026.

The HAC stated the suspension aimed to allow the government to adapt laws for better oversight of digital platforms and to encourage constructive dialogue for content moderation. This action followed a rise in defamatory, hateful, and obscene content circulating online, impacting human dignity and national security.

A new law, ratified on October 5, 2026, now governs administrative and judicial responses to digital misinformation, including content amplified by artificial intelligence. The HAC also reported developing active collaboration with platforms like TikTok, Meta, and YouTube.
