Gabon youth fight female cancers in Mouila
Over 300 young people learned about prevention and risks during a three-day awareness marathon.
In Mouila, Gabon, the Jeunes Capables collective organized a three-day awareness marathon in secondary schools to combat female cancers. The initiative, which concluded on October 17, aimed to educate over 300 young people about prevention and associated risks. Dr. Aubin Djembi informed students about the causes, risk factors, and consequences of breast and cervical cancers, stressing the importance of early detection and regular medical follow-ups.
Philippe Arnaud Nziengui, president of Jeunes Capables, expressed satisfaction with the high participation of the target audience. The event highlighted the ongoing challenge of promoting early detection for improved recovery chances in Gabon, where diagnostic delays and limited access to specialized exams persist. Cultural barriers and fear of results can also deter women from seeking medical care.
Globocan estimates that Gabon records approximately 295 new cases of breast cancer and 146 new cases of cervical cancer annually. The initiative by Jeunes Capables shows that the fight against female cancers requires information and community mobilization, alongside effective access to healthcare. Medical specialists emphasize that screening should extend beyond October, with any unusual symptoms warranting a consultation.
