Man jailed seven months for stabbing brother

Basiru Sumareh admitted attempted murder and was sentenced to prison and ordered to pay compensation.

Basiru Sumareh received a seven-month prison sentence for attempting to kill his brother by stabbing him. Magistrate A. Darboe at the Brikama Magistrates’ Court convicted Sumareh on Thursday, 29 October, after he pleaded guilty to the charge. The incident occurred on 17 October 2026 in Brikama, West Coast Region, when Sumareh stabbed Baboucarr Sumareh in the chest and back with a knife.

Sumareh appeared in court without legal representation, while DSP K. Kinteh prosecuted the case. The court admitted a medical certificate, photographs of the victim's injuries, and the alleged weapon as evidence. Sumareh acknowledged the prosecution's facts, which detailed the stabbing with malice aforethought.

In sentencing, Magistrate Darboe cited Sumareh's early guilty plea as a mitigating factor but stressed the seriousness of the offence. Sumareh was sentenced to seven months at Mile 2 Central Prison and ordered to pay D100,000 in compensation to his brother, with an additional year of imprisonment for non-payment. The sentences are to run concurrently.
