Turkish Airlines considers Equatorial Guinea flights

The airline evaluated Bata, Mongomoyen, and Malabo airports for potential service resumption.

Turkish Airlines is assessing Equatorial Guinea's airport infrastructure for a possible return of its flights. The evaluation follows a meeting in Turkey between the Minister of State for Transport, Honorato Evita Oma, and Turkish Airlines' CEO, Ahmet Olmuşur. The airline previously operated a route to Malabo, inaugurated in February 2020.

Delegations visited the international airports of Bata, Mongomoyen, and Malabo, examining terminals, check-in, security, baggage handling, and boarding facilities. At Mongomoyen, they toured operational areas and sites for a future Aeronautical Special Economic Zone. The visit also included the Aeronautical School and an aircraft repair hangar, which the government aims to use for regional pilot training and maintenance services.

The government seeks to leverage its airport investments to create an aviation hub in Central Africa. This strategy includes passenger and cargo transport, aeronautical training, and maintenance. A resumption of Turkish Airlines flights would enhance international connectivity, open new markets via Istanbul, and boost tourism, trade, and investment.

Why it mattersEquatorial Guinea's government aims to boost its economy by developing its airport infrastructure into a regional aviation hub.
