hundreds stranded on zwედru highway

hundreds of vehicles and travelers have been stuck for over a week on the Ganta–Zwedru Highway.

Hundreds of travelers and motorists are stranded for days on the road linking Monrovia to Zwedru, Grand Gedeh, as deteriorating conditions have cut off the highway in several sections. Commercial vehicles, private cars, and passengers are affected by the muddy and swampy terrain, particularly between Toe Town and Zwedru. Some travelers have been waiting for over a week for the road to become passable.

More than 150 vehicles were reportedly trapped in muddy conditions between Duogee Town and Senneh-wen in Grand Gedeh County, according to reports. Travelers are calling on the Ministry of Public Works to intervene urgently, warning that prolonged delays are contributing to food shortages and rising prices. The ministry stated on October 21 that a team was working to stabilize a 100-meter swampy section near Duogee Town.

The highway serves as a critical transportation corridor for southeastern Liberia, affecting the movement of agricultural produce, food supplies, and fuel. The recurring deterioration is linked to heavy rainfall and poor drainage. Travelers are urging the Ministry of Public Works to restore passage quickly to prevent further hardship for passengers, traders, and residents.
