Liberia summons health officials over Ebola preparedness

Lawmakers want details on response measures amid Nigeria outbreak and Bundibugyo Ebola concerns.

Liberia's House of Representatives has summoned health authorities to a briefing on the nation's readiness for public health emergencies. The decision followed reports of a confirmed Ebola case in Nigeria and an ongoing outbreak in Bundibugyo. The Minister of Health and the Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) are expected to appear before the House on Tuesday, October 27.

Montserrado County Representative Dixon Seboe requested the briefing, citing the need for detailed information on preparedness, including medical supplies, trained personnel, and emergency response resources. He also wants updates on disease surveillance, laboratory testing capacity, and the availability of isolation facilities across Liberia's 15 counties. Border and port health authorities will also explain screening procedures.

The summons also seeks information on public awareness campaigns, infection prevention supplies, frontline health worker training, and resources for enforcing preventive directives. Seboe also called for details on measures to protect public schools, markets, and densely populated areas, particularly in Montserrado County.

Why it mattersLiberian citizens' health and well-being are at risk if the country is not prepared for a potential public health emergency.
