Lesotho launches M547.4 million airport-Mafeteng road project

The 64-kilometre road rehabilitation is expected to take 36 months and create temporary employment.

Public Works and Transport Minister Matjato Moteane launched a M547.4 million project to rehabilitate the 64-kilometre road connecting Moshoeshoe I International Airport to Mafeteng Traffic Circle. The project, awarded to Sino Hydro Corporation Limited with Mafube Consulting Engineers as consultants, is scheduled for completion within 36 months.

Minister Moteane urged the contractor to ensure quality workmanship and local community involvement, including sourcing equipment locally and allowing villages access to surplus quarry materials for their own road improvements. He stressed the importance of worker welfare and adherence to specifications, warning against substandard materials.

The road project is part of the government's strategy to enhance national road infrastructure, boost trade, and stimulate economic activity by creating temporary employment. Similar road upgrades are underway, including repairs on Masianokeng road and reconstruction between Mohale’s Hoek and Quthing.
