Lesotho pension fund reports M2 billion returns

The Public Officers’ Defined Contribution Pension Fund achieved M2 billion in investment returns for the 2025/26 financial year.

The Public Officers’ Defined Contribution Pension Fund (PODCPF) in Lesotho achieved M2 billion in investment returns for the 2025/26 financial year. Finance Minister Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane praised the fund for its resilience against global economic shocks and for upholding good governance. The fund's assets under management increased from M14.1 billion in 2025 to M16.4 billion in 2026.

These results were shared at the Fund’s fourth Annual Member Engagement Forum, themed “Be informed, Prepare for the future, We are with you.” Minister Matlanyane noted the fund's strong performance was significant given global challenges like geopolitical fragmentation and trade tensions. She added that global equities produced double-digit returns, with developed markets, particularly the United States, making substantial contributions.

Lesotho's domestic economy experienced modest growth, supported by construction linked to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project Phase II. Government finances benefited from Southern African Customs Union (SACU) transfers and water royalties. However, underlying economic growth drivers remain weak, with limited private sector expansion and persistent unemployment impacting the textile industry, exports, and household demand.

Why it mattersPublic officers in Lesotho can expect their pension funds to remain resilient and well-managed, despite global economic instability.
