Mahlala urges Lesotho to exploit local resources for jobs
Basotho Development Front leader Bothata Mahlala says the nation must harness its own capabilities instead of relying on foreign markets.
Basotho Development Front (BDF) leader Bothata Mahlala stated that Lesotho must fully exploit its competitive advantages to create jobs, rather than relying on foreign markets and outside assistance. The Quthing-born businessman and philanthropist advocates for supporting Basotho-driven projects and generating employment from the country’s existing resources. Mr Mahlala, who previously contested the Mount Moorosi constituency in 2022, formed the BDF after leaving the Democratic Congress.
Mr Mahlala believes Lesotho has the capacity to produce and export on its own terms, suggesting the nation can produce goods for the South African market due to lower production costs and wages. He also pointed to the potential for job creation through agriculture and bottling clean water for export. These initiatives, he argued, do not require external help.
The BDF leader’s message comes amid ongoing economic difficulties, including instability in the textile and apparel sector, which is Lesotho’s largest source of formal jobs. The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was extended to December 31, 2028, but Mr Mahlala feels the country should not depend on such agreements for its economic future.
Why it mattersLesotho's citizens face persistent unemployment and economic challenges, and the BDF leader proposes internal solutions.
