UN extends Libya mission until October 2027

Security Council resolution backs efforts to unify state institutions and hold elections within two years.

The United Nations Security Council has extended its political mission in Libya until October 31, 2027. The resolution supports efforts to unify state institutions and establish a single executive authority. It also urges Libyan parties to commit to holding national elections within 24 months.

Resolution 2835, adopted on Friday, October 30, renews support for Hanna Tetteh, the UN secretary-general’s special representative. Britain led negotiations on the text, which supports the “4+4” process agreement reached on August 30. This agreement provides for changes to the electoral framework and leadership of the High National Elections Commission.

The Council calls for a broader UN presence across Libya, including in Benghazi, Sabha, and Sirte, with greater engagement in the east and south. A dedicated economic section will address fuel smuggling, diversion of public funds, and illicit exploitation of state resources, stressing that petroleum resources belong to all Libyans.
