Madagascar photography festival marks CERES anniversary

The SAR'nao Festival in Antananarivo celebrates 20 years of the CERES education program and contemporary art.

The SAR'nao Festival launched its annual Month of Photography yesterday, November 3, at the Alliance Française d’Antananarivo. This year's event highlights photography's role in memory, transmission, and contemporary creation with two exhibitions. The first, "20 ans du programme CERES," runs until November 8 and showcases 20 years of the Centre de Renforcement Éducatif et Scolaire's work with rural youth.

This CERES retrospective features black and white photographs from 2015 by Pierrot Men alongside images from 2025 by Guillaume de Tapol. Their combined work illustrates the evolution of young beneficiaries and the challenges of education access and equal opportunity. A second exhibition, "AFFEKT" by Faly Randrianjatovo, will run from November 10 to 14, exploring intersections of dance, movement, body, and fashion.

Complementary workshops on fashion photography, led by Faly Randrianjatovo, will take place from November 11 to 13. The festival also includes outreach activities for Alliance Française learners and schoolchildren to promote photographic art. The Month of Photography aims to foster photography as a space for reflection and creation in Madagascar.

Why it mattersMadagascar's youth and cultural engagement are directly affected by the Month of Photography festival and its educational outreach.
