Mauritania ministries sign deal to aid farmers

The environment and agriculture ministries agreed to protect farmlands in Oualata under the 'Mbedra' project.

Mauritania's ministries of Environment and Sustainable Development, and Agriculture and Food Sovereignty signed a cooperation agreement in Nouakchott on Friday. The deal, part of the 'Mbedra' project, aims to support farmers in the Oualata municipality, protect agricultural depressions, and boost local production to improve living conditions.

The agreement was signed by the secretaries-general of both ministries, Moulay Brahim Ould Moulay Idriss for Environment and Ahmed Salem Ould Larbi for Agriculture. The Environment secretary explained the accord supports efforts to manage the Klab Risha protected area, balancing resource protection with local livelihoods. This initiative responds to demands from Oualata residents and farmers following the President's visit on September 21, 2026, especially regarding the protection and use of agricultural depressions after recent rains.

The Agriculture secretary stated the agreement aligns with the President's 'Ambitious for the Nation' program, focusing on improving rural life and food security. Oualata's mayor, Mohamed Elamine Ould Bab, identified three key needs for protecting the agricultural depressions, locally known as 'Lkrayer': 14 kilometers of additional metal fencing, 10 guards for four months, and 10 flexible tanks for drinking water for farm workers. These needs arise as farmers prepare to cultivate the depressions, which are now filled with rainwater, facing challenges like stray animals and the need for crop security and drinking water.

Why it mattersFarmers in Oualata will receive support to protect their agricultural depressions and enhance local production.
