Malawi U-15 team finishes 79th at Fifa World Cup

The team's performance in Baku exposed significant gaps in the nation's youth football development structures.

Malawi's Under-15 boys national football team concluded the inaugural Fifa Under-15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan, ranked 79th out of 189 nations. The team secured 15th place in Tier C after achieving five victories against Chinese Taipei, Oman, Suriname, Hungary, and Rwanda. Takutzwa Maluwe was Malawi's top scorer with eight goals, contributing to the team's overall performance.

Despite individual successes like Maluwe's eight goals, defeats against Algeria, Argentina, Luxembourg, Panama, and Thailand highlighted areas needing substantial improvement in Malawi's youth football development. Namasala Academy owner Wesley Namasala observed that international competitiveness requires sustained investment in coaching, facilities, nutrition, and competitive opportunities, noting that foreign players were often more physically developed.

Namasala proposed establishing at least 10 residential academies across Malawi to build a strong foundation, stating that short training camps cannot replace childhood development. Zambia's success in winning Tier B by assembling a squad from 11 schools also suggests schools football as a viable alternative pathway for talent development in Malawi.

Why it mattersMalawi's youth football development structures were exposed as lacking compared to other nations, impacting the future of young players.
