Mutharika returns, blames fuel and power issues on saboteurs
President Peter Mutharika stated he was in full control of Malawi during his absence and promised consequences for electricity disruptions.
President Peter Mutharika returned to Malawi on Saturday after a private trip to South Africa and asserted he remained in charge of the country. He stated he was in constant contact with the Chief Secretary and ministers, dismissing speculation about other officials running the government in his absence. Mutharika also warned individuals deliberately causing problems in the electricity sector that they would face consequences.
The President attributed persistent electricity disruptions to man-made issues, promising that blackouts would end by December as machines were being repaired. Regarding fuel shortages, Mutharika explained that supplies were available at ports in Tanzania and Mozambique, including Nacala, Beira, Tanga, and Dar es Salaam, but logistics were hindering transportation into Malawi. He asked for patience, stating these fuel transportation challenges were beyond government control.
Mutharika, who has made five private trips since October 2025, thanked citizens for messages during his absence and called for unity using the Swahili expression 'Harambee'. He arrived home on Saturday, November 1, 2026, following his nearly month-long trip.
