AI could boost Namibia's economy by N$3.58 billion

A new study ranks Namibia 36th out of 56 Commonwealth countries for AI readiness.

Artificial intelligence could increase Namibia’s economy by N$3.58 billion over the next decade, according to a 2026 Commonwealth Youth AI Readiness Index study. The Ayre Think Tank report estimates this gain under a moderate adoption scenario, with potential increases ranging from N$1.73 billion to N$5.43 billion.

The study, released on Thursday, ranks Namibia 36th out of 56 Commonwealth nations with a score of 42.7 out of 100, below the readiness benchmark of 53. High youth unemployment, with 47% of young people in the labour force jobless, and limited electricity access, reaching only 59.3% of the population, are identified as major barriers.

Researchers noted that inadequate digital infrastructure, slow broadband, and internet disruptions further hinder participation. Ayre Think Tank founder Calvin Ayre stated that governments must equip young people with skills for emerging technologies, as AI will transform work and wealth creation.

Why it mattersYoung Namibians face challenges in benefiting from AI-driven economic growth due to high unemployment and poor digital infrastructure.
