Equity Bank Rwanda launches EMMA digital wallet
The new app allows users to make payments, save money, and access credit based on transaction history.
Equity Bank Rwanda launched its EMMA digital wallet app on November 5 in Kigali, enabling users to make payments, send and receive money, save, and access credit. The app connects to Rwanda’s payments network, including eKash, MTN MoMo, and Airtel Money, and does not require customers to have an existing Equity Bank account to register.
Managing Director Hannington Namara stated that the app aims to help money move lives forward, building on Rwanda's financial inclusion progress. Diane Uwase, a Kigali small business owner, found the app useful for managing everyday business payments directly from her phone, simplifying transactions that previously required bank visits.
FinScope 2024 data shows 96% of Rwandan adults are financially included, with 22% holding bank accounts. Namara emphasized that EMMA's success will be measured by active use and saving habits, not just downloads, and that customer transaction activity may influence eligibility for overdrafts and short-term loans.
Why it mattersRwandan adults, particularly small business owners, can now manage daily transactions and potentially access credit more easily through their mobile phones.
