Seven miners killed in Kigali mine flood
Water flooded underground tunnels at a mineral extraction site operated by Calliane Mines Ltd in Nyarugenge District.
Seven miners died on Thursday, November 5, when water flooded underground tunnels at a mineral extraction site in Nyarugenge District, Kigali City. The site is operated by Calliane Mines Ltd.
The incident happened in Mageragere Sector, near the Nyabarongo River, as miners extracted minerals underground. Water suddenly entered the tunnels around 4:00 p.m., trapping seven miners who could not escape. About 200 people were present at the mining site when the flooding occurred. Local authorities and security agencies retrieved the seven bodies.
The official cause of the flooding remained undetermined by Friday. Miners at the site suspected that excavation activities might have breached an underground water source linked to the Nyabarongo River. Nyarugenge District officials visited the site on Friday and confirmed the recovery of all seven bodies, with arrangements being made for their burial.
