Rwanda police add 1,652 officers to prevent crime

Interior Minister Dr. Vincent Biruta urged new recruits to anticipate threats and work with citizens to stop crime before it happens.

Rwanda's police force has added 1,652 new officers, including 337 women, to better combat crime. The graduates from Gishari Police Training School were challenged to prevent offenses before they occur.

Interior Minister Dr. Vincent Biruta told the new officers that modern policing requires anticipating threats, using technology, and cooperating with citizens. He stressed the need for a force that prevents crime rather than just responding after the fact.

The police will confront a range of crimes, from theft and drug abuse to cybercrime, human trafficking, and terrorism. Minister Biruta stated that officers must develop their capabilities to address these evolving security challenges.

Why it mattersThe addition of new police officers and the directive to proactively prevent crime directly impacts the safety and security of Rwandan citizens.
