Rwanda to host African Grand Prix in early 2030s
Formula 1 signed a 10-year agreement for a new circuit in Bugesera, south of Kigali.
Formula 1 will bring the African Grand Prix to Rwanda in the early 2030s, following a 10-year agreement. A purpose-built circuit is planned for Bugesera, approximately 40 kilometres south of Kigali. The Rwanda Development Board is overseeing a wider project for sports, tourism, and infrastructure development.
African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf stated that the deal should help young Africans gain skills and find work in the global sports industry. He described the agreement as a milestone for African sport, noting that major international events can attract investment and tourism. Formula 1 says over 100 million people across Africa follow the sport, with nearly 60 percent of fans in key sub-Saharan markets under 35.
The race marks Formula 1’s return to Africa for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix. The new venue is intended to host events throughout the year, not just race weekends. Youssouf said the initiative aligns with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision for an integrated Africa.
