China deploys anti-drone systems in Abyei after attack

Chinese peacekeepers reinforced UNISFA after a drone attack killed UN personnel in the disputed region.

Chinese peacekeepers deployed anti-drone detection and jamming equipment in the disputed Abyei region on October 28, following a drone attack on a market on October 19 that killed members of a United Nations peacekeeping force. China’s Ministry of National Defence stated the specialised equipment aims to detect and jam drones and strengthen security to prevent further attacks. A Chinese peacekeeping rapid-response force returned to its camp after completing a security reinforcement mission.

The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) requested the Chinese peacekeepers’ assistance to reinforce a Pakistani infantry battalion after the October 19 attack. Upon arrival, the Chinese force deployed anti-drone systems and strengthened defensive measures against potential aerial attacks. The security operation included using surveillance drones to monitor the market and secure the surrounding area.

UNISFA’s leadership praised the Chinese peacekeepers for their swift response and professionalism, stating their intervention helped protect lives and property and strengthen stability in the region. The reinforcement mission concluded after the security situation stabilised, allowing the Chinese force to return to its camp.
