Sudanese army drone strike kills 36 in Nyala market
Médecins Sans Frontières reported 150 wounded and bodies of 21 civilians among the dead from the October 26 attack.
A Sudanese Armed Forces drone strike hit a busy market in Nyala, South Darfur State, on Monday, October 26, at around 8 p.m. local time, causing devastation. A second strike hit a civilian neighborhood. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) stated that Nyala Teaching Hospital received 36 bodies, with 21 identified as civilians.
MSF project coordinator Dale Koninckx described patients arriving at the hospital with shrapnel injuries and severe burns, some carried from the market on tuk-tuks and donkey carts. Medical staff treated over 150 wounded patients, including women and children, who were shaken by the event. Koninckx questioned why markets, essential for accessing food, were being targeted.
This attack follows a similar incident on October 16 in Nyala, which killed at least four people. MSF noted that these attacks expose civilians to violence and limit access to food and supplies amid growing malnutrition concerns. The organization also called for stronger security measures for its work in Central Darfur, requesting authorities remove commercial sites from around Zalingei Teaching Hospital.
Why it mattersCivilians in Nyala are directly affected by drone strikes on markets, leading to deaths, injuries, and limited access to food.
