Drone strike cuts Khartoum power
Al-Markhiyat transformer station damaged, affecting electricity in capital and other states.
A drone strike on the Al-Markhiyat transformer station in Omdurman on Tuesday, October 27, has disrupted electricity supplies across large parts of Khartoum and River Nile State. The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum confirmed the facility sustained extensive damage, taking it out of service. Technical teams are assessing the site to determine repair needs.
The power outages worsen living conditions for residents already facing shortages of basic services. Khartoum resident Abdel-Gadir Al-Sheikh described the situation as extremely difficult, with prolonged electricity and water shortages, fuel scarcity, and bakery closures. The Sudanese Electricity Company accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of targeting power stations in multiple states.
This strike followed similar drone attacks on electricity facilities in Al-Jazirah, Sennar, Al-Qadarif, and White Nile states on Monday, October 26. The United Nations has expressed concern over continued drone attacks and damage to civilian infrastructure. Sudan has been at war since April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF.
