Sudan demolishes over 100 homes in Al-Jazira village

Residents protest demolitions, citing discrimination and lack of shelter as winter approaches.

Authorities in Sudan’s Al-Jazira state demolished over 100 homes in Taiba Al-Sheikh Abdul Baqi village on Tuesday. The Violations Unit of the state Ministry of Urban Planning carried out the operation to remove illegal structures from government land.

Wael Al-Amin, a land inspector, stated the demolitions were part of the mandate to protect state land. However, Adam Dahab, a traditional leader of the Mararit tribe, condemned the action as appalling and called for an assessment of the damage and documentation of the destruction.

A female resident described families enduring difficult conditions for years and questioned the authorities' failure to protect them, leaving them exposed as winter begins. The Central Committee of the Kanabi Conference rejected the demolitions as routine, calling for an investigation, suspension of further demolitions, and compensation for losses.
