UAE court jails eight for smuggling arms to Sudan

Eight individuals received life sentences for using companies and forged documents to move military equipment to Port Sudan.

An appeals court in Abu Dhabi sentenced eight people to life in prison for smuggling weapons and ammunition to the Sudanese army. The court also gave three-year sentences to others, acquitted two, and fined six companies involved in the operation. Authorities ordered the confiscation of funds and equipment, including ammunition and communication devices, used in the illegal deals.

The case involved an attempt to transport military supplies, including Kalashnikov rifles and grenades, valued at $13 million, to Port Sudan. Investigators found that $3 million of this amount was allocated for illicit commissions. A second transaction used over $2 million from the first deal to buy more ammunition, with part of the shipment entering the UAE disguised as humanitarian aid.

Emirati authorities uncovered plans to smuggle an additional five million rounds of machine-gun ammunition through six more operations. The prosecution presented financial records, bank transfers, correspondence, and confessions to prove a network used companies and commercial fronts to hide the nature of the deals and fund movements. The convicted individuals will be deported after serving their sentences.
