Senegal aims for 48.5% emissions cut by 2035
The nation needs $24.9 billion for its climate goals, with most expected from international partners.
Senegal plans to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 48.5% by 2035. Achieving this target will require $24.9 billion in investments, with a significant portion anticipated from financial partners. Minister of Environment and Ecological Transition Aliou Gori Diouf announced these goals in Dakar on Monday during the validation meeting for the third National Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0).
Without international support, Senegal projects emission reductions of only 13.3% by 2030 and 19.4% by 2035. With appropriate international backing, the country aims for 31.6% reduction by 2030 and 48.5% by 2035. The $24.9 billion needed includes $16.9 billion expected from financial partners, with the remainder sought from international cooperation, private investment, and trust funds.
The planned investments will fund initiatives such as renewable energy development, mangrove restoration, reforestation, and improved waste management. The strategy also includes developing less polluting transport like the BRT and TER. NDC 3.0 focuses on both emission mitigation and adaptation to climate change impacts, including measures for water resource management and coastal protection.
Why it mattersSenegal's climate strategy requires substantial international funding to achieve its emission reduction targets, impacting national development and environmental resilience.
