Doctor shot in revenge attack at Cueibet hospital

Relatives of a patient who died at the facility allegedly attacked a doctor on duty on Thursday.

A doctor was critically wounded in a suspected revenge attack at Cueibet County Hospital in South Sudan’s Lakes State on Thursday. Santino Mayom Kau was shot in the chest at about 5 p.m. while on duty. The attackers fled and remained at large.

Lakes State caretaker minister of information William Koji Kirjok stated on Friday that preliminary investigations suggested the attack was linked to revenge. The doctor was transferred to Rumbek State Hospital for treatment. Kirjok said authorities are working with traditional leaders to curb revenge killings.

Simon Makoi Malek, the medical officer in charge of Cueibet County Hospital, said the attack occurred because relatives of a man who died at the hospital believed the attackers came from the same area as the doctor. Daniel Laat Kon, coordinator of CEPO in Lakes State, condemned the attack and urged the state government to address revenge killings and disarm civilians.
