GIZ gives 12 grinding machines to South Sudan farmers

The German agency aims to boost income and reduce processing time for cereal farmers in Yei River and Magwi counties.

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH provided 12 cereal grinding machines to 12 farmer groups in Yei River and Magwi counties on Tuesday. Each group, comprising 25 members with 60 percent females, received one machine through GIZ's Improved Living Conditions and Psychosocial Support (ILiPS) project.

GIZ South Sudan stated the initiative aims to support income-generating activities by improving access to processing equipment, reducing time and effort for cereal processing, and increasing product value. Ramson Duku, Agricultural Advisor, emphasized the equipment's role in promoting self-reliance and strengthening household livelihoods.

The project will offer follow-up training and technical support to ensure sustainable use of the machinery, which is part of broader efforts to strengthen agricultural extension services and promote climate-smart farming. The ILiPS project also supports returnees, internally displaced persons, and host communities.

Why it mattersSmallholder farmers in Yei River and Magwi counties will benefit from reduced processing costs and increased income opportunities.
