South Sudan shortens school year for elections

Primary and secondary examinations moved to November to allow for December 22, 2026 general elections.

South Sudan has reduced its academic calendar by one month to ensure national examinations conclude before the general elections on December 22, 2026. The Council of Ministers approved changes to the education schedule in September, advancing primary and secondary exams to November.

Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, the Presidential Advisor on Foreign Affairs and International Relations, and former Minister of Cabinet Affairs Dr Martin Elia Lomuro are among political leaders whose parties have joined newly registered coalitions. The Political Parties Council announced the registration of several political alliances on Wednesday as parties organize for the upcoming vote.

Dr Lomuro's South Sudan Democratic Forum is part of the National Agenda Coalition of Political Parties, which includes 10 political parties. Abdelbagi leads the South Sudan Patriotic Movement under the South Sudan Opposition Alliance. Two other coalitions, the Coalition of National Alliance of Political Parties and the National Alliance of Political Parties, have also been registered.

Why it mattersSouth Sudan's students will complete their academic year earlier than usual due to the upcoming general elections.
