Special Court rejects Riek Machar's video evidence request
The court ruled Machar's application to play video footage supporting his arguments was premature.
The Special Court in Juba rejected former First Vice President Riek Machar's request to present video footage during his trial on Friday, October 23, 2026. Presiding Judge Dr. James Alala Deng stated the application was premature as the proceedings had not yet reached the stage for considering such evidence. Machar, 74, had sought to play videos of senior government officials to support his defence.
Judge Deng explained that Machar should first focus on understanding and responding to the specific charges against him, as the court had not yet framed the charges. The lead prosecutor had also opposed the application, arguing it was too early for video evidence. The court adjourned the proceedings to October 26, 2026, for the examination of the fifth accused to continue.
Separately, the Special Court announced it had completed an investigation into alleged threats against Machar, his defence team, and co-accused. Judge Deng said individuals identified in the investigation have been referred to the attorney general and police for further action. The defence team had raised concerns about the safety of the accused and their lawyers last month.
