Pupil accuses teacher of sexual assault at high school

Four teachers at Sikhunyane High School are suspended amid allegations of inappropriate relationships with students, including a sexual assault claim.

A 17-year-old pupil at Sikhunyane High School has accused a female teacher of sexual assault, contributing to the temporary suspension of four teachers. The suspensions, involving three male teachers and one female teacher, are a safety measure while investigations into alleged romantic relationships with pupils proceed. The school committee was initially informed by the late head teacher about two pupils reporting such relationships.

The allegations surfaced throughout the year, with one case involving a mother discovering romantic conversations between her child and a teacher on a mobile phone. A Ministry of Education and Training official met with the school committee and teachers, warning them to cease any inappropriate conduct. The committee expressed shock and anger, with parents demanding the teachers' suspension, but the ministry advised patience for ongoing investigations.

The school community, including pupils, has been traumatized by the incidents, with a senior teacher stating the need for psychological support. Despite the disruption, the temporary removal of teachers has not caused disturbances, and remaining staff are working to reassure students. The incidents occurred during a critical period as pupils are writing external examinations.
