Togo men urged to check for breast cancer signs

Less than one percent of breast cancers occur in men, but early detection is key for treatment.

Men in Togo are being urged to be aware of breast cancer symptoms, as the disease can affect them too. While October Rose campaigns focus on women, male breast cancer is rare, accounting for less than one percent of all cases. This rarity means men may not recognize signs like a lump or nipple changes, delaying diagnosis.

A lump or nodule near the nipple, nipple retraction, skin changes, or a swollen armpit can indicate breast cancer in men. These signs, though not always cancerous, warrant rapid medical evaluation. Men with a family history of breast cancer, genetic predispositions like BRCA mutations, or certain hormonal conditions face increased risk.

Consulting a health professional is important if any suspicious signs appear, regardless of age or perceived risk factors. Early diagnosis through clinical exams, mammography, or ultrasound, followed by biopsy, improves treatment outcomes for men affected by this uncommon but serious condition.

Why it mattersMen in Togo are directly affected by the need to recognize and seek treatment for breast cancer symptoms.
