Tunisia plans 8.2% rise in public sector wages for 2027

The government expects to spend 27.349 billion dinars on salaries, an increase from 25.267 billion dinars in 2026.

Tunisia's draft budget for 2027 allocates 27.349 billion dinars for public sector salaries, an 8.2% increase from the estimated 25.267 billion dinars in 2026. This spending represents 39.7% of the budget excluding debt repayment and 13.7% of the gross domestic product. The budget also plans for 32,557 new positions, with education and higher education receiving the largest share of new hires at 7,388 positions.

Education will receive the largest portion of the salary budget, with 8.220 billion dinars, or 30% of the total. The Ministry of Interior follows with 4.404 billion dinars (16%), then National Defense with 3.307 billion dinars (12%), and Health with 3.172 billion dinars (12%). The draft budget also includes provisions for regularizing the status of workers over 45 and holders of doctorates.

The government aims for a 3.1% growth rate in 2027, though some business leaders find the economic recovery support insufficient. Yassine Gouiaa, president of the National Organization of Entrepreneurs, stated that the 230 million dinars allocated for economic recovery is too small, especially given the current crisis and rising energy costs. He noted that previous financing lines for startups have not yet been implemented.
