Samia inaugurates Sh700 billion government city in Dodoma

Tanzania's new administrative hub, Mtumba Government City, officially opened with modern offices and infrastructure.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan officially opened the Mtumba Government City in Dodoma on October 30, inaugurating new offices, roads, and infrastructure. Angolan President João Lourenço attended the ceremony for the new administrative hub, designed to consolidate ministries and public institutions. The government invested approximately Sh700 billion in the project, which includes 59.1 kilometres of paved roads and 1,635 streetlights.

President Samia directed government officials to enhance their ICT systems, ensuring citizens do not need to travel to Dodoma for every service. Construction of the modern facilities began in 2021 to meet current and future administrative needs. The project aims to reduce paperwork and enable electronic document exchange between institutions.

The move to Dodoma as the capital began in 1973, with operations formally relocating in 2016 under President John Magufuli. The government states the relocation aims to bring public services closer to citizens and stimulate growth in central regions, creating demand for transport and housing.

Why it mattersTanzanian citizens will benefit from improved access to government services and potentially reduced travel needs due to the new administrative hub.
