Tanzanian banks partner with startups
Innovators gain access to financial systems and capital, boosting the country's growing tech sector.
Banks in Tanzania are collaborating with technology startups to help innovators develop business solutions and access markets. These partnerships allow startups to integrate their systems with banking services, creating products for financial management and transaction tracking. Gwakisa Bill Mwaipopo, CEO of XB Limited, stated that collaboration with NMB bank provided his company access to Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for developing business support technology.
Prosper Absalom, founder of Daraja Technology, also highlighted the importance of financial institution support, like that from NMB, in bringing startup technologies to market. He noted that regulatory hurdles and access to banking systems are significant challenges, making partnerships with established institutions valuable. Absalom urged the government to encourage more financial institutions to collaborate with innovators.
This collaboration occurs as Tanzania's startup ecosystem expands, with the number of startups growing from 247 in 2020 to over 1,300 in 2026. Tanzania Startup Association Chairman Paul Makanza stated these companies support approximately 20,000 direct and 124,000 indirect jobs, emphasizing the need for capital and markets alongside innovation for business growth.
