Tanzania opposition party mourns 500 killed in 2025 election crisis

CHADEMA held a memorial event in Dar es Salaam for victims of the violence that followed the October 29, 2025, elections.

Tanzania's opposition party, CHADEMA, held a national memorial event on November 3, 2026, in Dar es Salaam to remember over 500 people killed during the 2025 election crisis. The party announced a seven-day mourning period, flying flags at half-mast. The ceremony included prayers, poetry, candle lighting, and laying flowers.

Party communications personnel Brenda Rupia read a message stating, “The lives of our loved ones were of great value.” The message honored those lost and affirmed the party's commitment to truth, dignity, and justice. Vice Chairperson John Heche addressed the difficult historical period and claims of leadership blame for the crisis.

A Commission of Inquiry, chaired by retired Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman, investigated the violence and presented findings on April 23, 2026. The commission reported 518 deaths and 2,390 injuries, with evidence suggesting planned and coordinated execution by organised groups motivated by grievances or financial promises.

Why it mattersTanzanian citizens, particularly families who lost loved ones or suffered injuries during the 2025 election crisis, are directly affected by the ongoing remembrance and the findings of the Commission of Inquiry.
