algeria launches probe into food waste
videos show produce dumped outside cities to prevent price drops, prompting judicial action.
Algeria's judicial system is investigating the deliberate destruction of food, particularly tomatoes, to artificially keep prices high. The public prosecutor's office at the Court of Algiers ordered immediate and exhaustive inquiries on Thursday, October 22, following the circulation of videos on social media. These videos depict individuals discarding edible food and vegetables outside urban areas from trucks.
The investigations aim to identify all parties involved in these actions, including those who incited, financed, or profited from them, regardless of their position. The judicial authorities also seek to uncover the networks and distribution channels behind these practices. Those found guilty will face prosecution with the full force of current legislation.
This action follows President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's recent order to the Prime Minister to investigate fraudulent practices and speculation in the marketing of imported meats. The president had previously directed investigations into similar issues surrounding imported meat sales during a Council of Ministers meeting.
