Algeria sets deadline for Mostaganem port specialization

Mostaganem port will exclusively handle public sector import operations starting January 1, 2027.

Algeria has set a timeline for the specialization of the Port of Mostaganem, designating it solely for public company import operations. The Port of Mostaganem company informed private economic operators that all non-public sector rolling traffic must be rerouted by October 31. A transition period until December 31 is available for ships with pre-scheduled rotations and existing commercial commitments.

Starting January 1, 2027, the port will no longer accept vessels not destined for public enterprises or organizations. The activity of self-entrepreneurs in maritime passenger transport is also being redirected to other ports by October 31. These measures are part of a national effort to reorganize port activities and transfer traffic to other locations.

This specialization is a component of Algeria's broader port modernization initiative aimed at reducing vessel waiting times and speeding up customs clearance and cargo unloading. The decision to reserve the port for public entities follows a directive from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Why it mattersThe Port of Mostaganem will change its operations, affecting private businesses and self-entrepreneurs involved in maritime transport.
