Museveni urges Sheema farmers to adopt irrigation
President Museveni promoted commercial farming, pasture growing, and fertiliser use to combat poverty and drought.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni urged farmers in Sheema District to adopt irrigation, pasture growing, fertiliser use, and commercial agriculture to increase productivity and lift households out of poverty. He spoke today at a thanksgiving ceremony for Internal Affairs Minister Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu at Bugongi Town Council Playground.
The President stated his commitment to fighting poverty began in his school days, recalling visits to government stock farms where he saw improved livestock and agricultural infrastructure. He contrasted these with the subsistence farming many communities practiced for immediate needs.
Museveni highlighted the four-acre model, introduced in 1996, which advises dedicating land to coffee, fruit, pasture, and food crops, supplemented by poultry, piggery, or fish farming. He called on leaders to intensify efforts to reach households not yet engaged in commercial production.
Why it mattersUgandan farmers in Sheema District are directly affected by President Museveni's call to adopt commercial agriculture practices.
