Uganda discharges 60 Ebola contacts

All individuals monitored for 21 days showed no symptoms after contact with a Kenyan traveller.

Uganda has released 60 people who were in contact with a Kenyan traveller diagnosed with Ebola. Health Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi announced Sunday that all contacts completed the mandatory 21-day monitoring period without developing symptoms. Uganda has not recorded any new Ebola cases since declaring its outbreak over in July.

The contacts included hotel staff, transport operators, and airport personnel who were monitored after investigations into the Kenyan traveller's movements through Uganda. Baryomunsi confirmed that none of the monitored individuals tested positive for the virus. Uganda declared its Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak ended on July 28, 2026.

Despite being Ebola-free, Uganda remains vigilant due to ongoing transmission in the Democratic Republic of Congo and cross-border travel. Health authorities are investigating a reported case in Nigeria involving a woman who travelled from Uganda. Screening at Entebbe International Airport and border crossings has been intensified.

Why it mattersUganda has successfully monitored and discharged 60 contacts of a Kenyan Ebola case, confirming the country's continued freedom from the disease.
