Spiro Uganda to triple battery hubs by December

The electric mobility company plans to expand its network from four to 11 mega battery-swapping hubs to support growing demand for electric motorcycles.

Spiro Uganda plans to triple its mega battery-swapping hubs from four to 11 by December 2026, the company announced. This expansion aims to support the growing demand for electric motorcycles by improving battery availability for riders. Each hub can charge 200 batteries simultaneously, with the company integrating solar and grid power sources.

Bruce Mucunguzi, Spiro Uganda's Deputy Country Director, stated the expansion is critical for riders switching to electric two-wheelers, alongside maintenance and spare parts. He spoke at the Renewable Energy Conference and Expo 2026 in Kampala, organised by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development. Spiro Uganda has four existing hubs in Mukono, Soroti, Jinja, and Bukoto.

The planned 11 hubs by December will enhance Spiro's network of over 360 stations nationwide, allowing riders to swap depleted batteries for charged ones. Allan Muhumuza from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation noted that Uganda's electric vehicle production capacity reached 79,000 units annually in 2025, with 25,000 electric vehicles manufactured locally. Officials highlighted the need for clear regulations governing electric vehicle infrastructure, including safety and charging facilities.

Why it mattersSpiro Uganda is expanding its electric motorcycle infrastructure, affecting riders and the growing electric vehicle sector in Uganda.
